I have found that, as Joe stated, more resistance helps my playing significantly. Also, for me, the reverse is true. I'll practice with a practice mute, which increases the resistance. The resistance naturally makes my air pressure increase a bit. I believe that this also helps my volume of air going through the horn. I do some mouthpiece buzzing after the practice mute session and the amount of air I put through the mouthpiece is huge. After that, I play the horn open again and my sound is very round and solid. I didn't notice it much at first, but after using a pratice mute for a few weeks, I discovered my sound had improved greatly.
