Okay Matt, you have a good topic here. As solder gets old, it crystalizes or looses it's adhesive ability. Just like older cars, you have to budget more for repairs when a tuba get's older. This is also why some of us shops charge more for an overhaul than others. If you just take apart enough solder joints to get up the big dents, 5-10 years later you can have alot of solder joints that weren't redone at overhaul time start to give up on you. That's okay for an economy overhaul going to a school that is going to trash the horn anyway. A better overhaul will unsolder more of the horn and be more attentive to detail. You can save alot of money playing an older horn, just budget some of that savings into repairs.
