In principle gold has any advantage of smoothness and non-provocation of allergies, which is a potential problem for me, as I am very allergic towards a lot of food elements.

But the only non-custom gold plating of satifactory quality I ever have met is the one on my Yamaha Douglas Yeo signature mouthpiece. But so it should be, as the price is higher than for a standard mouthpiece. And the secret possibly is a heavy layer of silver underneath the gold.

On my tenor and alto trombones I have worn the gold of a great number of Denis Wick mouthpieces, so it was a great relief for me, when DW started to sell his mouthpieces in silver plate as well. The feeling is smoother than on the gold plated versions, probably because the silver layer has been more generously applied.
