One of the reasons this piece doesn't get performed as often is economics. With an instrumentation that includes 20 horns, most orchestras take a financial hit just playing this piece. This piece was scheduled on our season last year but it was cancelled because we simply couldn't afford to take the financial loss that most likely would have occurred. Until the general public is willing to pony up the dough, there are alot of these kinds of works in the grand scope that you'll only hear on recordings.
