Thanks for your comments, Rob. My very old Conn (1904) was tuned very flat (noticably lower than A=440) and was not having any of the other problems associated with a flat horn like leaky valves, bad spit valve, holes, etc. I ended up removing about 1 3/4" (total tubing length of 3 1/2") from the main tuning slide. The horn sounded very nice with the group I played with last night. In the case of a horn this old, I was under the impression that 'modern pitch' referred to a horn that tuned somewhat higher. I was not aware that 'modern A=440' is actually somewhere in the middle of all the changes that took place between whenever and the thirties. Thanks again.
