I have a set of 12 piece for solo tuba, the 'Painterly' Etudes (each study is an enigmatic portrait of a 20th-century painter). The pieces are all intervallic studies and can be mixed and matched into suites as the performer sees fit (hey, there are two cubist studies, so you ought to be able to cut and paste, right).
One of my former composition students has played some of them on graduate recitals and found that they are quite audience-friendly.
