I played on an F-BBb double tuba in a little brass shop in Hamburg in 1962. It had five rotary valves. The primary four were double rotors, like on a french horn. The shift key could be arranged to default either to the F or the BBb side. To save weight, the maker arranged for air to go through one set of valve tubing loops when in F, and BOTH sets sequentially when in BBb. It was an interesting idea, but the BBb side was very stuffy, practically unplayable. When I returned to the shop about a week later it had been sold.
