I think this is about as clear a statement of the difference between an American and German sound as I've ever seen. It is exactly what I was looking for in an instrument to complement my own Miraphone 186.

I'm not sure that an instrument with these qualities must require more air than an instrument producing a "column" of sound, though many do. The Alex I tooted on Saturday requires just about as much air as any horn I've every played (and a bit more than I produced on it), and it was the ultimate producer of a column of sound.
