Interesting thread. I personally think that in the turn of the century North America was the world leader in brass playing. The great players and teachers all cropped up around the country. The Sousa band, the CSO brass, the LA Pil and the NYP all produced virtuosity that had never been seen before. However, it's my personally opinion that in the last ten years Europe has become the place of pioneers for the 21st century in brass playing. Steven Mead, Heiko Treibner, Christian Linberg, Roland Szentpali are not just good players from Eurpoe. These guys are pushing the envelope of quality brass playing. Perhaps you can name as many North Americans who are still pushing this art form. Let me know what you think.
