Where is it that you are going to school and your future teacher says you need a bigger tuba and then leaves you to your own devices to find one? Did you get this advice from a phone call, or in the context of several lessons? Many tuba fans seem to feel a Big-Ass-Tuba is a big-ass-pain to play, so much so that folks who've never even owned one but have tooted a few notes shout opinions all over the place. Additionally, the "cut" 6/4 tubas really exacerbate the unique character quirks of huge tubas. Younger players generally need horns that slot well and have an evenness in intonation across the register. IMHO the average undergrad has no business messing with a Holton or Yorkbrunner or 2165 or PT7, at least not yet. I also believe that if you WERE one of the exceptionally gifted kids who could make great use of a BAT and you had the playing situations where you would NEED one that you would'nt need to be looking to this list for direction.
