I've never won a major audition, so I'm not qualified to say. However, I've lost auditions to people who had BATs. It probably makes some sense to drag as many different horns to auditions as you can stomach to do so. You'd certainly would want to play Bydlo on your best Bydlo horn. But, your Bydlo horn may not be the best one for Petrushka's Dancing Bear, etc. I like playing Petrushka's Dancing Bear on an Eb. And so it goes . . . I do think that a good BAT does give someone an edge in things like Prokofiev 5; Bruckner 8; Mahler 6, but that doesn't mean that you can't do a decent job on something smaller. May the best player win.
