Well, here's one for your "hobby". An F horn is actually half as long as an F tuba. It is analagous to the length of an F euphonium. That's why it has the range it does, because of the longer length combined with the smaller bore.

I remember that French Horn wrapped tuba Roger had. I believe it was even backwards, as in the valves were operated with the right hand. I shudder to think that a tuba could effectively be played with a hand in the bell. Maybe a catcher's mitt? ;-)
