Well, yes and no. It depends upon the service as well. In the Army, the only units you audition specifically for are the Special Bands: The US Army Band; The US Army Field Band; The Military Academy Band; The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. The other 30 active duty Army bands fill their ranks from people auditioned by band commanders or one of six enlisted Army Band Liaisons. Here is the process. 1. Take and pass the ASVAB. 2. Take and pass the Army physical. 3. Take and pass the band audition. 4. Enlist in the Army for your specific instrument and you will get to select your assignment from the bands that have vacancies 90 days before you go to Basic Training. There are lots of benefits - college money up to $50,000, College Loan Repayment up to $65,000, starting rank of E-3 or E-4 and much more.
