I did the same thing, I went from Minnesota to Custom, by car, it took us like 17 hours or so, there were some snow storms we went through. I tried the Hirsbrunners, both of their models and then the Sterlings. For the money the Sterlings are great, the Hirsbrunners were a bit out of my price range. I played them though, WOW! their Great. Check out what they have at the Woodwind and Brasswind. And ask yourself what type of playing you're going to be doing, because some horns don't work AS well as solo horns and others work well as solo and ensemble horns. I ended up with a Sterling Perantucci that I really like. I say try them all. I didn't get to try the Meinl Weston 451, that is a nice horn, I finnally got to play it at the ITEC. Just make sure you play as many as you can, it will all pay off in the end :)
