What you don't say is how long you have been playing for a living, and how willing you are to travel. The best way to make a living is to find a gig with a full time orchestra. I know, that's easier said than done, but if you are flexible I understand that there are often positions available in some European orchestras. Basically, you need to go to where the work is and it will take some time for the right opening to come up. Otherwise, make sure that you have a teaching certificate and find a job in a public or private school somewhere. That will at least give you time during the summer to pursue full time playing.
I know a very prestigious french horn player, who was very much in demand for recording and Broadway and who had been first horn with a large symphony (which went bankrupt), who was teaching in a local public middle school for a steady income.

Also, the idea of doubling on bass will give you more options.
