I think you got it about right. Also consider that the tuba at the time of it's invention/evolution was not the gigantic beast you may see these days. Also consider that the euphonium/baritone/tenor horn IS a tuba. it is a member of the tuba family.

because of its distintive tone, composers/arranger use it differently depending on the situation. Even in the same piece of music the euphonium might re-enforce the tuba part. play with the trombones or bassoons or tenor sax or baritone sax. it might play a counter line to the woodwind parts or it might even have the melody. In music that was originally written for an orchestra but has been arranged for band (a transcription) the euphonium part is made up of what the 'cellos were playing in the original piece. Euphonium players may now take an opportunity to curse Fingals Cave and some of the other kooky parts we've had to play.
