What you may want to have him do is go all the way back to basics for a week or two. What I mean by this is "ignore" anything studies he may otherwise be working on and focus on doing the simple things right. From simple articulations, move to long tones to scales and then back into the literature. Move slowly and patiently, paying special attention to making beautiful sounds with proper technique. By eliminating the bad habits completely and starting over from simple excercises, he may discover better ways to do other things!
After a few days of rudiments (length depending on how much he practices), have him move progressively back towards his goal. Don't try short cuts, as it may only cause him to stumble back into his habit.
