Hernia is a consideration at my age (53).
I loved the BAT sound of the 25J, and I suppose that ultimately, that's
what I'd like to recapture. However, I have a 12 yr. old son who
is a reed man at the moment but has shown some interest in moving to
"heavy metal." My recollection of having moved to the low brass at about
his age (I was a trombone player before then) was that the Conn sousaphone
that I started playing then was so large that I could hardly fill it.
When I had to start carrying the sousies (in 9th grade), I could hardly
lift the thing high enough over my head to put it on without losing my
balance, which was a precarious thing in the football stands. I didn't
get onto a 25J until I was in my second year of college, but which time I
was 18 and able to heft that monster around.
The smaller horns sound like a better bet for Andrew to be able to
left and fill with sound. I'd like to encourage him, not let
him be frustrated with a horn he could barely lift and can't
get full enough of air to make a good sound.
He's a fine alto and bari sax player (not bad on guitar and keyboard,
either), and there just never are enough good tubists around, IMHO.
Thanks again!
Graham
