I once picked a teacher because of his sound. I figured anyone could drill me on notes. But I wanted to learn how to produce that sound. In the end, I never approached it, but I'm sure the hearing it up close pushed me in the right direction.

It reminds me of a story. I put a brass quintet together many years ago for a wedding gig. The group comprised amateurs like me (that was a mistake, but that's another story). We were trying to play some CB stuff, and I pointed out how the CB phrased the end of the tune. A trumpet player (of course) said, "Shouldn't we play it our way?"

My response (which did not help): "What, you mean including the wrong notes?"

One has to achieve a certain level, probably through imitation, before one is ready to explore an individual sound. I don't want to sound like me if that means sounding bad.
