I'm going into college this year as a music education major. Your major will probably determine what key horn you get. I decided on a VMI 3302 (five valve-BBb)and it more than gets the job done so far. I play in a brass band, believe me you need to be able to cover the entire dynamic range of a tuba to play in one so I don't see it holding me back in an orchestral setting. Most teachers will not tell you, "play Kalison, etc.." try to get a 4/4 horn that you will also be able to play in Brass choirs as well as orchestra. I strongly recommend the VMI 3302, also the Conn 52/56J if you ae looking toward a CC tuba. Good luck.
