Bruckner isn't around to ask...and that's unfortunate.

Many perceive the > thing as an instruction to play the beginning of the note (or the entire note) louder, and the ^ as an instruction to play the beginning of the note (or the entire note) "stronger" or even "harder". Unfortunately, when one uses words like "stronger" and "harder" they are meaningless without audible demonstrations.

I recommend listening to recordings and relying on your own musical logic.
