Interesting point. I studied with Jamie Hafner at the Brevard Music Center in 1979 and 1980. he had just taken delivery in 1979 of a Hirsbrunner with a flat 2-3 4th valve. The fifth valve was a flat whole step. He had this horn made this way because he had an old Sander CC with the same set-up and learned CC on it in the 60's. When I was in Colorado I met the tuba player with National Rep. Orchestra, summer of 1983. He was a student of Sam Green's at CCM and just bought a tuba that had the same set up. He had the 4th valve lenghtened to get it down to a P4. Wonderful player and good guy, wish I could remember his name. FWIW, I have a buddy that has a fixed bell King BBb with the 4th valve pitched in a tritone. Go figure!!!!
