Observe that "euphonium" was coined during an era when innovation was going full tilt and often, a name represented an attempt to avoid legal action by one's competitors. So there are a lot of oddball instrument names from the 19th century; my favorite is "bimboniphone" (a type of alto horn).

"Baritone" was probably the name attached firmly back then to the tenor/baritone saxhorn. Something else was needed for product differentiation.
