I don't believe this would be the problem you suggest. Trombones take the bell section off and put it back on every time we play, and frequently replace the bell flare or gooseneck to suit a particular sound requirement. And, of course, there are the trombones that allow you to use either the valve section or slide. Seems to me that the trick would be making the connection just before or just after the main tuning slide, and having both bow/bell sections represent the same 'virtual length'. As long as you do that it doesn't seem to me you'd have a problem. BTW, wouldn't a Mir. 186 and a 188 be good candidates for this experiment?
