The world is full of examples of misguided optimization (remember the Japanese receiver spec. wars of the '60s and '70s, where total harmonic distortion figures of .01%, .005%
were claimed for receivers that measured well but sounded terrible for music?).

The Viennese optimization software is quite interesting, but the developers only model the fundamental mode of vibration, so higher-mode behavior is ignored, which could be important for French Horns and tubas playing in the high range, as well as for trumpets playing in the "screaming" range. The software also ignores the contribution of the "chamber behind the mouthpiece" (which has been physically modeled, recently).
