If it weren't for all of those mediocre players tinkering with their horns, we'd be severely lacking in the "innovation" department. HOWEVER, as a self proclaimed mediocre tubist, I DO(along with my regular self-betterment) tinker with my horn when I read about some new gimmick that may or may not better my horn... if it works, I keep it, if it doesn't, at least I tried. I do purely out of curiosity, though, and of course with the desire of somehow improving my horn... but because I'm mediocre? Nah, I'm sure I'd be trying out all these same gimmicks no matter what my musical ability.
