I was lucky. I got my 'Handmade' 1985 from Scott Mendoker back in 1991. I got the tuba, the Walt Johnson case and gig bag for $10 grand. He had a little custom work done to it and I had a bit more, but this horn is a Godsend. John Fowler and a few other people like Chris Olka have played it. Everyone who has played it recently was slack-jawed and speachless because this horn is awesome. You never know what you may find if someone is unloading equipment. Taking the chance to just try someone's used axe may enable you to find that diamond in the rough like mine. My point being... it never hurts to try out a used horn; if you don't like it, give it back!
