You should have charged the airline for the incident with your souvenirs. If you have to wait longer than 48 hours on all or part of your luggage you are entitled to compensation for the wait. I was once planning to charge them for (imaginary) lost gigs ++ for when my tuba was left in Munich, but unfortunately the guy from the airline knocked on my front door 47 hours 56 minutes after my plane landed in Manchester. Bugger! 5 minutes later and I could possibly have had part of the ticket price back...
