I have just watched what has to be the greatest performance of Mahler's 2nd I have ever had the good fortune to witness. Simon Rattle and the CBSO transcended the written music and spoke volumes about life, death, and hope. The orchestra was astounding, the soloists the same, and the choral work was the best I have ever heard. The best part was the tuba playing. What a HUGE sound coming from a Besson EEb. I am a beleiver that this horn can do it all after this performance. This was no blowfest, it was a controlled, incredibly tight ensemble that would be the envy of ANY orchestra. Great Principal Hornist and Bone player. Oh yeah, the brass chorale was the best I have ever heard. FWIW, the production was done by Channel 4 in 1998. WOW, get Ovation and hope they replay this again. Peace.
