I had the same problem but add in terrible pitch and you can begin to understand where I started. My teacher and I went through a sight singing course that has improved my pitch atleast a thousand fold. At the same time I was noticing that playing, singing, and buzzing these simple tunes was helping my rhythm. I found that the best thing for rhythm improvement is to start with very simple exercises and work with your metronome. If you have the urge to through your metronome against a wall, you are on track. The most important thing is to have some one listen to you or to record yourself so you can evaluate yourself objectively. The next big secret is to subdivide like crazy. It will get easier to subdivide as you work on it.
Hope this helps,
