While a metronome is a good idea (especially a Doctor Beat: the DB-66 or the newer DB-88), I'm surprised no one has mentioned the VERY obvious exercise of "sing, clap & tap" where you count out the rhythmn to the smallest subdivision used, clapping for the notes you're playing. This is the sort of elementary stuff my daughter's trumpet teacher started her out with at the age of 9, but believe me it works and it helps you work out a new piece quickly. While we tuba players can get away with being fairly rhythmically challenged as beginners, the trumpets have to come up to speed pretty quickly. And most of the trumpet teachers I know teach the kids to "sing, clap & tap".

Try it, it can't hurt!
