I could be wrong, but my father used to mention Herb and Joe Novotny and Don Butterfield and Harvey Phillips and Bill Barber often in connection with his time with Bill Bell in the early 1950's, and he introduced me to several of them at Goldman Band concerts. It's quite possible that Herb studied with Geib before that. I do remember reading the story about him in the TUBA journal, but do not remember the details. There was also a roster of professional tubists published by TUBA a few years ago mentioning the brands and keys of the instruments used by tubists in all the major symphony and opera orchestras, and there were several BBb players mentioned in addition to Herb W. I remember that Warren Deck's instrument was listed as a Conn "Frankenstein" model.
