A person who can do both well (electric bass and tuba) can get steady gigs as long as they are available. Especially if they aren't afraid to play "dumb" music (top 40). Electric bass is a very viable double and also fairly portable to gigs, as long as you aren't running around with an 800 amp system. Plus a decent bass set up is considerably cheap. All of the military bands take doublers and when the theme parks are hiring doublers always get the first call. A good tuba and bass player can find a lot of gigs a lot easier than an exceptional tuba player who only plays tuba.
