I've found that I simply cannot leave my tuba unattended unless it's in a hard case. There's no excuse for other musicians to screw around with anyone's instrument. The worst accident that happened was when a snare drum was accidentally knocked over onto a rather rare detachable upright bell. The bell was nearly torn through but some careful work by an expert repairman fixed the dent without ripping the brass. That at least was an accident. Worse than this was when my sousaphone was carried off after a parade by a group of adolescents who "thought I didn't want it." It was rescued when a trumpet player I knew caught them with it.
