You may also want to try the Center for Musical Antiquities, I believe it's called. It should be in the phone book (yellow pages under "Musical Instruments"); that's how I originally found them. Now, this was many years ago, so I'm not positive they're still around.
This is somebody's condo on the Upper East Side, as I recall. You call to let them know that you're coming. They've got serpents and ophicleides and civil war-era tubas, among many other instruments. Some, but not all, are for sale.
