Although I feel quite sure that it will never be regarded as a "classic" (as certainly the VAUGHAN Williams will never be, either), the JOHN Williams tuba concerto has some merit:
1/ The first movement is memorable.
2/ The second movement borders on sublime (' requires a player).
2/ It ends with a lot of energy.
3/ The piece is of reasonable length (not a "concerto-ette").
4/ The piece is "as good" as some concertos that are performed on other instruments and taken seriously.
Again, it's not destined to become a "staple of serious music literature". Let's face it: Who ever mentions the piece (or any tuba pieces) besides tuba players?
