Since it appears you've posed a hypothetical question for the sheer pleasure of thinking about it, I gotta say that "what sounds best" is a relative term in relation to the programming, the ensemble, the section, and a player's abilities. If one more than one tuba, then "what sounds best" also must factor in whatever equipment is available. It really has nothing to do with what one may "happen" to own, but has EVERYTHING to do with what is most appropriate for a given playing situation.

DO you own a tuba? DOES it limit your ability to perform what appears on your stand? Theres a big difference between the demands of a student or community player versus what the big-time pros are confronted with, as a student/community player the norm is weeks and weeks of rehearsals and practicing daily and then a concert or two per "term." As a pro there are two or three rehearsals at most and then as many as three or four or more performances of that program, and then the same cycle the next week. Thus, for a "pro" orchestral tubist the player finds assistance in using different horns for different programming.

My experience is, when one is fortunate to own more than one horn, certain or different playing situations will be best suited by using certain or different instruments.

dunno if this helps any,
