Bore sizes are misleading, I think. The Yamaha has a really short leadpipe and a .690" bore, and most of the smaller rotary F tubas have a longer leadpipe and a bore in the .71" range. I think the Yamaha plays as it does because of the taper design, which expands much sooner in the bugle than a rotary. In terms of height and bell diameter, they are about the same. I agree with you that the Yamaha makes a bigger sound and blows like a bigger horn. One big difference: The Yamaha works well with a large mouthpiece (I use something in the Conn Hellebergish range--an Elliott 132-2N R4). This mouthpiece would suck the life out of the little 182--it works much better with a real F tuba mouthpiece, it seems to me.
