Hmm...at the end of Jupiter the hymn melody is presented by the tuba, bass trombone and basses. It's pretty exposed, though not quite a solo. It's ff and very low - could be the 'grumbly' part to which you're referring. If it's low and grumbly it's most likely a tuba anyhow. The tuba also has brief but exposed solos in Saturn and Uranus.
AFAIK 'tenor tuba' = 'euphonium' all the time, and the only exposed solos by the euph are of course in Mars.
