For this I have an interesting. When I was enlightened to the fact that these studes were written for voice, I bought a copy of the Bordogni method for vocalists, so I would have the words, that ADDS a great deal of insight as to which markings are slurs and which are phrase marks. In general, though, previous posters were correct in assuming a constantly legato toungue while the "sub-Slurs" are astually slurs. I think Rochut's intent was for the student to make everything as connected as possible, hence "studies in Legato"
