I would imagine that the upcoming change of conductors has at least something to do with this. If there are so many great applicants, why should they rush? - just looking at it from their perspective, that is. Someday, a real live tubaist will get the gig. Then we'll all have to spend our time and energy speculating about the next big audition, somewhere.
