1) Be yourself.
2) Find out why your students are playing; ask about their goals.
3) Play for your students.
4) Don't be afraid to be wrong or not know the answer to something.
5) Don't try to do too much too quickly.
6) Point out strengths and weaknesses together; be tactful but honest.
Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in product, (the desired musical result) and ignore process, (what happens in lessons, ensemble rehearsal, etc.). Students, (especially the younger ones) should have an enjoyable process in order to create good music. Any student who loves the process will improve with a teacher to help show the way. You will find that your own playing/practice skills will improve greatly by teaching others. Good luck as you begin this journey with your students!
