I also think that keeping the bore small is of vital importance. The instruments that we see comming out of Germany are far too large. The largest bore size for these should be around .687" and may be optimal at .650". Otherwise the sound gets woofy and loses the trombone-like character. There were two cimbassi at Indiana University when I attended in the 60s. Both were in BBb. One was a Bach piston-valve and the other was an Italian rotary. I used the Bach on some Puccini at the time. I thought it was perfect. Everyone else thought I was crazy. But that was neither the first nor the last time that has happened.
