I have an Altieri top loader, which works pretty well. The only advantage I can see to top loading is the bell hat. When I'm at a gig, or practicing, I use the hat when I place the instrument bell down on the floor -- no scratches or dings that way, no extra towel to carry.
The truth is that all gig bags are dent magnets, they're better than carrying the horn around naked, but not half as protective as a case.
