To answer your questions about the Barnes Symphony # 3: M. 5 is a duet with timpani for the first 34 bars. You have some freedom to use some rubato with the phrasing. Be patient with yourself and experiment with what will work for you musically. Technically its not difficult, but musically it will take some thought. M. 222 is in strict time. I believe the tempo should be around 132 to the quarter. It's a tough lick no question about it.

The USAF Band recorded the Barnes Symphony in 1996 on a CD titled "Excursions." Perhaps you can find someone, maybe a band director would have a copy. Hearing the symphony will help a great deal. The Band distributed these to music educators at Mid-West Band/Orchestra Clinic and several other music ed conferences for a couple years.
