A lot of this music is just played at by high schoolers, me being one of them. Most of us don't have the musical experience to really understand the music and play it with as much authority as possible. The thing about these pieces is that the phrases, for the most part, are very obvious, so we can pick them out as we stumble (relative to the post-high schoolers) through them. This is why when anyone gets a perfect score at all state auditions in CT (out of 270 points), I have a hard time believing it. We can go through these songs and play the notes, dynamics, and what people tell us is the correct phrasing (for the most part), but still don't have that understanding of the music that we'd need to play it and not just "play at" the piece. My modest two cents.
