Recordings are definitely a great idea. What I believe to be even more effective is to listen to good live musicians on a regular basis. The first step to improving tone is knowing what you want to sound like. Once you have an image of that "perfect sound" in your ear that you want, you will automatically try to emulate that sound every time you play your horn. Also, it can be very helpful to play and practice in many different kinds of rooms and even outside. The more variety of rooms in which you play, the more you will learn about your own sound.
