There have been several posts of late regarding the feasability of the orchestral institution in the North American (and European) society. There is a page (hosted by the Symphony Orchestra Institute) that provides a series of essays and viepoints on this (and other) topics. These opinions, needless to say, are not necessarily going to conform to your own opinions on the subject, but they may give you something to think about. They may even provide you with some fodder for discussions with your own organizations.Knowledge, as they say, is power.
Cutbacks are happening everywhere nowadays, just recently my organization (Broadcasting Orgainzation of the Netherlands) was informed (via an independent study by McKinsey) that there would be substantial cutbacks, possibly involving the dissolving of two or three of the major orchestras in Holland. It isn’t right, and it isn’t fair, but I think now we need to begin to be creative with our focus and find some leaders who will champion the arts as a whole, before it is all but too late.
Be well, DK
