Being a bass bone player, and not spending a lot of time on tenor; I would speculate that reliance on some equipment, and staying open would be a good idea.
A good focusing mouthpiece would help make the sound more trombonish while allowing the player to keep the more open mouth inside.
As a tuba doubler, I addressed the issue of being open in trombone playing by using a Doug Elliott setup that has a rim bigger than a Schilke 60, a 60 sized cup, and a 59 sized shank/backbore.
When I do play tenor, I use a 51D or a 57 size, depending upon the range of work.
