When the acid components of spit extracts the zinc from the brass alloy, then porous spots of copper are left back.. The tubing get leaky and the strength of its structure is compromised.

First generation Yamaha cornets were very vulnerable towards towards red rot until gold-brass leadpipes were introduced.

Generally I prefer gold-brass leadpipes over the ones made out of nickel silver. he latter are technically stronger, but I find that especially conical brasses are not well served by the hard and un-flexible feel and sound of nickel silver.
